There I was, a newly hatched consultant trying to figure out a way to help leaders become masterful at building and leading teams successfully.
The thing is, at the time I was struggling with translating what I instinctively knew and had observed about world-class leadership, working with extraordinarily successful Entrepreneurs, CEOs and Senior Executives in Fortune 500 companies internationally into practical "how-to" strategies I could share with my other clients.
The big problem was that that just about everything being written or taught about leadership at the time was just dead wrong!. I realized I had to let go of trying to find the answers in a book, or from the leadership "gurus" at the top business schools, and step off the know path they were all preaching, which meant I became a kind of a lone wolf presenting what at the time seemed totally contradictory and counterintuitive to what everyone "knew" about training great leaders..
Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened...
I realized that magnificent leadership isn't about what you do, as much about who you are ... it's all about shifting the deep mythology of what leadership is and isn't in terms of how you feel and embody it within yourself!
Instantly it became crystal clear to me how to help my clients reveal their own unique leadership identity and how-to experience themselves as a leader before they did anything else, because I saw I could finally translate my intuitions about leadership into a way of working with my clients, 1-to-1 and in groups, so they could find their way to knowing what it felt like to be a real leader within themselves virtually as soon as we began working together.
My plan was to start introducing this new way of working with clients in every leadership program I presented to create a kind of "mirror of excellence" for them to see themselves as leaders first and foremost.
So I started by changing how I worked with folks who really wanted to experience being leaders at a world-class level by helping them get what that meant to them individually, so they could bring that to the teams they led. But we didn’t stop there.
We then designed a completely new way of training that "tricked" people to leave behind all their old assumptions about who leaders are, and what leadership is, and to begin adopting the values and behaviors of the most effective leaders I had met and worked with around the world .
After that, we continued to refine the model of training we developed over more than twenty years so that in almost no time at all even first-time leaders could make this shift and create breakthrough performances with teams of their own.
Building on that success, we decided to design a single leadership training platform that became the basis for all the work we do with leaders as the foundation for everything else, even the most advanced and sophisticated 1-to-1 executive coaching we do with International Fortune 500 CEOs..
